shortshrift.com "Short shrift" was what criminals used to get between their sentencing and their execution: not a whole lot. Literally, it was a brief period to "shrive" themselves, that is, to make confession (as in "Shrove Tuesday") and nothing else. Fittingly, if you go to shortshrift.com, short shrift is indeed what you'll get — but without the spiritual cleansing. Bonus etymology: "Shrive" is adapted ultimately from the Latin verb "scribere" (to write) because of the practice of writing out penances or sentences to be imposed.
